Tips to Grow Oregano Microgreens Fast and Easy

Oregano is a kind of herb. It has an earthy and spicy taste, which is combined only with certain products. This herb also needs 3-4 weeks to form cotyledons. Thus, micro-vegetable oregano is much less popular than micro-vegetable clover or spinach. However, the unique flavor helps oregano to fill a very specific niche: Mediterranean cuisine.

If you like to prepare soups and dishes based on tomatoes, especially Italian and Greek dishes, micro-vegetables with oregano need a place in your garden. Its unique spicy taste is difficult to replace with other herbs, even herbs from the mint family. In addition, oregano grown in the form of microgreens has a sweeter taste than ripe oregano.

Oregano leaves grow ghost cotyledons on dark-colored stems. These small leaves are rich in nutrients, especially antioxidants and dietary fiber. They have excellent antiseptic properties and have always been used to action various ailments (including snake bites!).

Even if it takes longer to grow them than to grow other micro-herbs, oregano microtraumas are worth it if you like their taste and flavor. In this guide, we will look at all the details of growing oregano and many types of herbs, such as micro-herbs.

Greek oregano seeds

Seeds of ordinary Italian oregano

Organic micro-green seeds of ordinary Italian oregano

You can use ordinary Italian oregano seeds or experiment with several different varieties. There are many options for different tastes. Greek, Syrian or golden oregano is one of the most popular. Oregano is often confused with its related marjoram taxa and it is called “wild marjoram” (marjoram herbs are believed to have a sweeter taste). Whatever herbs you choose, get at least one ounce of seeds per growing tray.

Because we harvest the micro-plant before the roots develop, we will use shallow trays. the 10×20 grow trays can be purchased at most garden stores and online. For each harvest, you will need a pallet with good drainage holes and a strong pallet.


There are several types of microcells that need to be pre-soaked before planting, but oregano is not one of them. Tiny seeds can germinate without additional help as a result of pre-soaking.


We will start by preparing the culture trays. It is important that excess moisture can drain out, so use a culture tray with holes on the bottom. Fill it to the brim with seed potting soil or coconut fiber (seeds need a fine texture to germinate). Smooth the surface of the soil and sprinkle it with water.

Then sprinkle the oregano seeds in a thin layer on the ground. Spread them around the edges, but make sure that the seeds do not overlap too much. Give them another spray of water so that they begin to germinate.

Instead of covering the seeds with soil, place a second growing tray directly on them (both trays will be standing). This will block all sunlight and cause the seeds to develop sturdy roots and stems. Place a small load on the top of the lid pallet for accurate measurement.

To get a lush plant carpet, we will need 90% germination. To do this, you can place a heating mat under the hob. You should also take a look under the pallet every few days to make sure that it contains enough moisture.


The germination of oregano seeds will take between 5 and 7 days. After that, leave them for a few more days under the lid so that they really take root on the tray. When the pale green stems are ready to be lit, they will lift a pallet with a lid-weight and all!

After removing the pallet from the lid, place the growlight one foot just above the seedlings. Turn it on for about 16 hours a day so that the herbs receive enough light. Children’s plants will quickly reach the light and open their green leaves.

Because the formation of leaves takes a long time, you will probably have to water the oregano plant. Instead of watering from above, which can cause bacteria to multiply, fill the water from the bottom of the pan. It is enough to add a few centimeters of water to the tray that was previously used as a lid and put the microwave tray back in place. Give your green microtraumas 10 to 15 minutes for them to absorb the water through the drainage holes and the soil before removing the tray.


Micro-seeds are usually harvested immediately after opening the cotyledons. For oregano, it will be 16 to 22 days after planting. Collect the bright green leaves by cutting the stems into clumps. To keep the flavor of the plant as fresh as possible, stop watering 12 hours before harvesting.

As they come out of the stage of micro-greenery and turn into full-fledged plants, the sweet taste of these herbs changes. Although they all have a pleasant taste, most gardeners prefer to harvest to get a certain flavor. We recommend that you try the flavor of your micro-green herbs as they grow. If you do this with your first crop, you will know exactly when to harvest during the second crop.

Unfortunately, these herbs do not grow back after each harvest. Instead, you compost the soil, wash the trays and transplant a new batch.
